Hope

The sun is out. It has not been bright in Madrid for weeks. This is really unusual, Madrid. Last year, I hardly ever heard the sound of rain here. But now I hear it a lot. I have always felt European rain is pretty – a romantic touch. I am grateful for the wide bed I get to write this post from, with a big window, in a blue painted room. I am drinking this eucalyptus, mint, malva, thyme tea that’s supposed to boost my immune system. I got the flu last week. November was a strange month. I encountered all … Continue reading Hope

10 Important Quotes: insights of an expat

It was exactly one year ago that I wrote a blog entry regarding all the surprising things I found about life in Madrid after only a month in Spain: Phew. I feel safe around graffiti now. “The girl who’s carried an agenda since 4th grade finds herself in the present and *gasp* without a plan,” I wrote. It was the most perfect unplanned plan I have ever carried out. The entire year was filled with surprise. I allowed myself to be stunned by Spain. Living abroad for an entire year without a clue of what I would … Continue reading 10 Important Quotes: insights of an expat

Enchantment

Simone opened the door to our Airbnb, her hair wet from the shower, and a lose dress. “Of course she already looks like she lives here,” I thought. She had arrived a few hours before us. Sarah, Kristen, and I flew together, coincidentally sitting next to each other. These three girls are my Girl Power Team while living in Madrid. This trip was overdue. We decided to travel together during a late lunch at De Patata Madre in Bilbao, Madrid. Kristen and Sarah had spontaneously bought cheap flight tickets with a sketchy sounding airline: Wizzair. Simone and I spontaneously decided to join, though this city … Continue reading Enchantment

Lemonade

…And then I was served the strangest looking lemonade I had ever seen, yet the most delicious. It was a splendid whipped mixture of lemons, mint, dates, and heaven knows what else they do to it! I was at the Greenwave Café a ( vegan/organic/gluten free raw cuisine) place my (car-pooling/grounded/listening-ear/more-advice-than-I-wanted/timeless/wise-one) friend invited me to. It was my first outing after my sudden life upgrade. The world could not look or feel more different. My new perspective came with a side of Greenwave’s raw/vegan version of a cheeseburger: an explosion of never-tasted-before flavor in my mouth. This place was 5 minutes from … Continue reading Lemonade

The day a pigeon’s tush covered my eyes.

I learned how much happiness can fit into a single moment.  I retrieve images of this day from my memory to calm myself with its lifetime guarantee joy supply. After Stonehenge, the tour bus drove us to Bath. We were falling asleep on our way there, listening to the tour guide speak an overwhelming amount of information about this place. All I remember is that this was Jane Austen’s hometown and was founded by the Romans. The trees opened up in the mountain road to reveal a sight so incredible, and unreal, that my best friend smashed me against the … Continue reading The day a pigeon’s tush covered my eyes.
